Mason sat at a table set for three, he checked his watch continuously and glanced at the door. Seeing nothing come though it, he sighed, and began repeatedly thumping four of his right fingers on the table; pinky, ring, middle, index. thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump...
Chlöe walked into the restaurant with Alexa behind her, she smiled seeing her dad. She hugged him as she got to the table and pulled out a seat for Alexa and them for herself. "This is Alexa, the girl I told you about. Alexa this is my dad. Mason."
Mason looked at the girl and extended his hand. "Mason Kennedie. From what I hear, you are one clever girl. Shame that can only get you so far. I don't mean to pry Alexa but I need to know a little more about you and why - you are so interesting before I can even try to do anything about it."
She nodded. "I'm on the run from Optivus." She began. "A couple of years ago they tried to recruit my parents-they refused, so you imagine what happened. They tried to take me, but I ran off- they've been trying to get me ever since."
"I can't expect you would be able to tell Alexa, God knows I would of liked to keep anything like this from happening to Chlöe. But, if you know even a little about what your parents may have been doing to get the attention of Optivus. I need to know what it was they knew or were doing that got them killed."
"And the cards shift." Mason leans back into his seat as a waiter brings them butter, bread, and glasses of ice water, as the waiter leaves Mason speaks again.. "Before all of this did you ever think of joining the Council?"
"It may not be your kind of job but keeping secrets is a part of life well all have to do, be it part-time or full-time." He glanced at Chlöe quickly then back to Alexa. "It is a good that you do not agree either way. That puts you solidly neutral, but our kind of neutral is exactly what they are looking for. Were you ever implanted with a chip? If your parents were Council there is a very good chance you have one."
"Now that we have that unpleasantness out of the way. I asked you here because Texas has the best BBQ. Can we eat?" He looks at them both masking his foreknowledge of Alexa and the Miére's with genuine hunger.
Chlöe half-smiled and looked at Alexa. That went much better than she had expected, Alexa took everything in stride, impressively. She had this innate protective instinct of her and didn't completely understand why.
